Nervous Conditions: Examining Law Enforcement Culture and the Color Line

For many police officers of color, the ongoing protests over the deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Rashard Brooks triggered a profoundly complex web of conflicting loyalties spanning their roles and responsibilities as public servants and the pull of identity politics. Documented instances of protestors branding African American officers “traitor[s]” or “Uncle Tom[s]” speak to a pervasive narrative of diverse underrepresentation within many local and regional police departments. This conversation explores the physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural challenges facing minority police officers today. Our panel will discuss how senior leaders and external authorities can help effect sustainable organizational change.
