Despina Kartson

Director, Business Development & Communications, Jones Day

Despina Kartson has extensive experience in global business development, marketing, and communications, including strategic planning, practice and client development, public relations, design services, and internal, external, and digital communications. She leads the global Business Development & Communications department for Jones Day, a law firm spanning 43 offices across five continents. In this role Despina works with Firm leadership and lawyers to develop and implement strategy around client development, marketing, communications, and media relations.

Prior to joining Jones Day in 2016, Despina served as Chief Business Development & Marketing Officer with Morgan Lewis and Chief Marketing Officer with Latham & Watkins over the course of 13 years. She has been instrumental in setting the strategic direction and overseeing the operational implementation of the firms’ client development, marketing, and communications programs. Despina has led firm re-branding and website projects and worked closely with firm leadership on the combination of two firms.

At the start of her career, Despina worked in print and broadcast media for ABC affiliate television and radio stations in Ohio and for the Associated Press in New York. She began her legal career as a litigation paralegal at Thompson Hine and with White & Case where she transitioned into litigation support/e-discovery and published two books on the subject. She later worked as an assistant IT director for Cravath, Swaine & Moore and moved into business development and sales for two companies that provide outsourcing services to law firms and professional service firms. She is also contributing author of Building Rainmakers: The Definitive Guide to Business Development for Lawyers.
